History
The La Cañada Flintridge Tournament of Roses Association ("LCFTRA") was formed in May of 1978 by a group of engaged citizens from the Kiwanis Club of La Cañada. The original committee submitted an application to the Pasadena Tournament of Roses expecting approval to take several years. Instead they received an immediate approval and began to scramble in May in order to have a float ready for the January 1, 1979 Rose Parade. News reports from the time report that "it was decided to form a 'scrounge committee' to look into the availability of needed parts for the basic structure."
A few weeks later it was reported that the Scrounge Committee has "been scrounging from individuals, businesses and large firms for almost every item imaginable and checking out garage corners, backyard stockpiles and encouraging spring cleaning of storage sheds."
Ultimately a building site was donated by the Valley Water Company and the float – called "Horse Play" - made its debut in the 1979 Rose Parade. A photograph of Horse Play and every LCFTRA float since can be found in Our Float History gallery. LCFTRA is still using the water company site today. More than 40 years and 30 float awards later, LCFTRA continues to INSPIRE CREATIVITY, NURTURE FRIENDSHIPS AND BUILD COMMUNITY.
